Tax zones and rates
Charge the right tax for where you sell, and show it properly on invoices.
Your registration
Go to Settings, then Tax. Under Registration, fill in:
- VAT / tax number, once you're registered.
- Scheme: Included in prices if your prices include tax, or Added at checkout if tax goes on top.
- Label: what shoppers see it called, such as VAT.
Choose Save registration.
Add a zone
A zone is a group of countries with the same rates. Your shop starts with one for its home country.
- 1
Add the zone
Choose Add zone. Give it a Name, which prints on invoices, and list its Countries as two-letter codes, such as GB, IE.
- 2
Set the rates
Under Rates in this zone, tick each tax class that's taxed here and enter its Rate %. Tick Taxes shipping if delivery is taxed too. A class you leave unticked isn't taxed in this zone.
- 3
Save it
Choose Create zone. If two zones cover the same country, the one with the higher Priority wins.
Check it
Test a destination works out the tax for a country the same way checkout does. Use it after any change.
Each product's Tax class is on its Pricing tab. It starts as the store default.
On invoices
With a VAT number set, invoices are headed VAT INVOICE and show your VAT number and the tax on each line. Your legal name, company number and registered address come from Settings › Store.
Selling in other currencies
Shoppers can pay in their own currency only if multiple currencies were switched on when your shop was set up. Ask whoever set up your shop. Exchange rates are then managed in Settings › Markets: type your own, or use live rates.
